Several different vintage images, including one of the iconic beauty, Rita Hayworth, come together to express the dream of perfect womanhood. There is something about using vintage imagery that adds emphasis, because the photography is so exaggerated and idealized. And, too, these mid-century versions of feminine beauty are more complimentary to women, as contrasted with contemporary versions, which eschew the curves and voluptuousness of the female form. One piece of the source material has sustained a lot of damage, and when I first saw that, I was disappointed. But then, as I sorted through other pictures on my work table, the collage began to form in my mind in such a way that actually features the damage. To my mind, it adds to this invocation of the ephemeral, unreal quality of the unattainable.
