What Is / What Is Not
I was leafing through the pages of an old Life magazine and came upon photos of Oscar nominated films of that year (1949.) One Is of Jane Wyman in Johnny Belinda, and the other is Olivia de Havilland in The Snake Pit. Tucked into the upper corner, held in Jane Wyman's hand, is a photo of a mother and her newborn. The two films are about vulnerable women in dark, dangerous situations. I was young when I saw each of them, and was deeply affected by them. The inclusion of the mother and child is my comment on what is not there, what would have made a difference. Love, tenderness, comfort, protection. It's a very personal piece.
